Identify your Learning style (VARK)
The fact is that knowledge is “power and light”, it’s essential for everyone’s growth, but it’s unfortunate that some people find learning difficult, and I believe this could be possibly due to being unable to identify a learning style suitable for us. I learned about “VARK” as part of my foundation course at the University of the people (UOPEOPLE), I found this as a helpful resource for every learning curiosity minder out there and It’s my pleasure writing to share with you the process that helps you to identify a learning style suitable for you to learn.
Note: Identifying your learning style will make learning interesting and fun for you, trust me, age won’t be a barrier if you can identify your learning style.
The VARK model, which stands for Visual, Aural, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic, is a popular tool used to identify an individual’s preferred learning style. By understanding your preferred learning style, you can tailor your study habits and techniques to better suit your needs and improve your overall learning experience. Let me break it down in full annotation that will help you pinpoint your suitable learning style.
The Visual learning style is characterized by a preference for visual cues, such as diagrams, pictures, and videos. Individuals who prefer this style may learn best by looking at charts, maps, and other visual aids. They may also benefit from using colors to organize and highlight important information.
The Auditory/Aural learning style is characterized by a preference for auditory cues, such as lectures, discussions, and audio recordings. Individuals who prefer this style may learn best by listening to explanations and instructions and may benefit from verbal repetition and verbal cues. They may also benefit from taking notes to reinforce their understanding of the material.
The Reading/Writing learning style is characterized by a preference for written words and text. Individuals who prefer this style may learn best by reading through texts and taking notes. They may also benefit from writing summaries or essays to solidify their understanding of the material.
The Kinesthetic learning style is characterized by a preference for hands-on, physical experiences. Individuals who prefer this style may learn best by doing, such as through experiments, physical demonstrations, and simulations. They may also benefit from using physical objects and manipulatives to help them understand new concepts.
It is important to note that most people tend to have a dominant style, but that one’s learning style may not be limited to one of these categories. It is also quite possible that people use a combination of all or multiple different learning styles while they learn, and that different subjects or topics may require different approaches.
If you’re unsure of your preferred learning style, you can take a VARK questionnaire online to find out which style or combination of styles best aligns with your learning habits.
Once you’ve identified your preferred learning style, you can tailor your study habits to better suit your needs. For example, if you’re a visual learner, you may want to use flashcards with pictures and diagrams to help you study. If you’re an aural learner, you may want to listen to lectures or recordings of important information. If you’re a reading/writing learner, you may want to take notes and read through texts to solidify your understanding of the material. And if you’re a kinesthetic learner, you may want to engage in hands-on activities and experiments to learn.
Finding ways to incorporate all learning styles in your studies is also important. For example, in the case of kinesthetic learners, it can be good to relate the hands-on experience to some written or visual aids to allow deeper understanding and retention.
Additionally, using different study methods that incorporate all different learning styles can be beneficial, as it allows learners to access information through multiple modalities and increases their chances of finding the best approach to learning new information.
By understanding your preferred learning style and tailoring your study habits to suit your needs, you can improve your overall learning experience and achieve greater success in your studies. However, it is important to remember that one’s learning style may change with time, and it is worth re-evaluating your approach to learning every once in a while.
